Panel By Panel: Strange Tales #116

Panel By Panel is a regular feature at TSB where we present a single comic book page (or sometimes a single panel) of historical and/or artistic importance accompanied by a brief explication of its significance.

The internet has been abuzz since Stan Lee recently confirmed that Dr. Strange is likely the next Marvel hero to get the movie treatment. So why not choose a classic Dr. Strange page for our inaugural Panel By Panel segment?

Page 4 from Strange Tales #116 (Marvel Comics Nov 1963) is a quintessential example of Steve Ditko’s seminal work on Dr. Strange. Here we can get a taste of all the elements that made the good Doctor’s stories so special.

The first panel sets the tone for the page. Notice how all the line work, both in Strange’s face and in the background, lead the reader back to Strange’s eye, which is also highlighted by the shadows of his face. It evokes a visceral intensity that gives weight to his words “These are the most powerful, dangerous incantations known to man!”

What will happen?! Ditko draws out our expectation over the next two panels. First, by placing Strange in the background, obscured by the ominous shadow against the wall with the dripping candle (always evocative of the macabre) looming large in the foreground, and then coming in closer as a heavily shadowed Strange becomes engulfed in smoke.

By the fourth panel, the success of Strange’s spell begins to diffuse the shadows and we venture into Ditko’s reknown imagination. Strange takes up his trademark ‘astral form’ and enters a world that could only have come from the mind of Steve Ditko.

The imagery of the last three panels is unbounded by any physical world. These mystical forays into the astral realms became a hallmark of Ditko’s work on Dr. Strange. We may take them for granted today, but in their time there was nothing else remotely like it going on in comics. These panels, as fascinating as they are, represent only an inkling of the expansive, unhinged pages Ditko would eventually work up to. So outside the box were they, that many readers insist to this day that Ditko must have been using hallucinogenic drugs. (Unlikely, given Ditko’s rep as a straight arrow.)

Ditko, the consummate storyteller and sequential artist, ends the page with the tension of what’s to come. Who is the shadowy figure in the foreground of the last panel? This assailant of whom we are aware, but Dr. Strange is not? You better turn that page to find out!
