Brightest (Thurs)day – Brightest Day #12

Brightest day is a bi-weekly comic book series from DC comics which  focuses on 12 heroes and villains resurrected in this year’s Green  Lantern ‘Blackest Night’ crossover. In addition to the Brightest Day  title, there are several other titles bearing the Brightest Day logo  covering adventures related to the end of Blackest Night – more than  enough to write about weekly, so that’s what we are going to do. Read on  for pics, thoughts and SPOILERS on Brightest Day #12

This issue focuses on J’onn’s return to Mars and we get a whole heck of a lot of exposition related to what’s going on with this new green Martian.  He arrives at Mars already knowing her name D’kayy D’razz.  I had to go back and read issues 10 and 11 because I honestly couldn’t remember where we had left off with J’onn’s story.  I almost thought I had missed something, the introduction to this issue just felt so abrupt.

I just find this mouth/stomache thing so disturbing.

D’kayy tries the old ‘if I were the last Martian gal in the universe’ tack with J’onny and he rebuffs her advances with laser eye beams.  J’onn is understandably upset that the last Martian gal in the universe is a raving looney serial killer.  That does seem to fit this guy’s luck, though, huh?  We find out that D’kayy was a Martian serial killer imprisoned deep under Mars in a psychically shielded prison, so she was spared the psychic plague that killed all the Martians save her and J’onn (anybody know off hand what the issue numbers were that depict the destruction of the Martians, btw?  I’d like to read the story).  She’s glad that Martian society was decimated so that she can rebuild it all from the ground up.

Seeing the failure of her charms D’kayy decides to take a more ‘head on’ approach and headbutts J’onn right into some psychic combat.  We get to see a beautifully illustrated conflict between J’onn and a Justice League that’s great fun to see and seems to imply that somehow Martian Manhunter has been transferring the plant life he kills on Earth by to plant life on Mars.

Neat trick, huh?  I’m not sure how that works given his current power set, but writers have been tacking new abilities onto the Manhunter for years so I’m not too bothered by it.

J’onn fights off the psychic attack and uses his newly granted White Lantern powers of resurrection to bring life back to the Martian race including his wife and daughter.

This kind of scene always gets to me now. Ever since I had kids I became a real sap!

or did he?

Cue creepy background music!

Yeah.  Not surprisingly it looks like D’kayy beat J’onn in psychic combat here.  You could see it coming a mile away, right?  I wonder how long it will take Martian Manhunter to figure this out.  Not long, hopefully.  That could get tiresome really quick.

Firestorm and the ludicrously named Deathstorm also make a brief appearance this issue, the upshot being Deathstorm has somehow corrupted the White Lantern to create his own Black Lantern Corps and has absconded with the White Lantern Battery to parts unknown.

While I loved the super alien gross-out extravaganza artwork from Gleason, I really missed Aquaman and the Hawks this issue.  I think the Brightest Day series has really shown me that what I really want is a new ongoing for those characters.  Looks like the Hawks might get some focus next issue since the teaser is “Our Hawkworld at War”.
