Looking Through the Longbox: Cosmic books

Looking Through the Longbox is being “repurposed” as of this column. That’s technical speak for “two columns is one too many so I’m dumping all my comic thoughts into this column.” So Benty will be Babbling while Looking through his Longbox. And so forth.

Anyway, there are certain things about comics I can’t easily get anywhere else; aspects that, when they pop up, a small part of me can’t help but smile at the concept. One of those that recently popped up in the pages of Avengers Academy is the existence of Cosmic “abstract” Entities in the Marvel Universe.

The cosmic entities are the big guys, beings like Eternity, Infinity, In-betweener, Living Tribunal, and the central fame whore himself, Galactus. Each one a pure omnipotent force that exists beyond ordinary definitions or existence. For instance, Eternity’s the living embodiment of the Universe itself.

I love that. The universe has a name. All the Marvel guys are basically sitting inside Eternity. And “Eternity” is so much more fitting than “Larry” when a Universe wants to refer to itself.

I also love how there’s levels of all-powerful as well. As powerful as a fully fed Galactus is, wiping bits of planet off his chin (or something like that) Eternity is basically the big gun, which when you’re the embodiment of all that is and was and will be you’ve earned the right to have everyone else serve you coffee. But even he’s not on the top of the food chain. There’s the big shiny yellow dude, The Living Tribunal, who’s so powerful that he can bitchslap Eternity and tell him to fetch his coffee.

Apparently with guys this powerful who gets the coffee is very important. You’re gonna need a bigger cup.

And The Living Tribunal, the judge of all things that keeps the universe running smoothly, is himself subservient to the One Above-All, who is basically God of the Marvel Universe, and police sketch artists say resembles Jack Kirby.

Most of these characters were introduced in various Dr. Strange stories in the 60’s and 70’s, which makes sense, since the good doctor was always getting his hands wrist deep in cosmic muckymuck. It was a time of great imagination and invention back then, when the scope of Marvel kept expanding and expanding past the limit of the pages.

The cosmic entities have been brought back here and there, most of the time to show how dangerous a potential universal threat might be, whether Korvac, the Beyonder or Thanos.

When Thanos pulled together the Infinity gems and then attached them to a Gauntlet and named a series after himself, the Cosmic entities gathered together to stop him. Say what you will about the merits of story or Starlin’s fairly broad writing and characterization, but the one two bang of Thanos versus the heroes and then Thanos versus the Cosmic entities remains an extremely exciting pair of issues. Omnipotence versus omnipotence, the master of all there is versus all there is, big universe destroying battles beyond human comprehension…these are the types of larger than life concepts and comics that this medium is for, and frankly they still excite my imagination.

And that’s what comics are all about, Charlie Brown.
