Review – Batman Knightfall: Volume 2

Knightfall Volume 2: Knightquest the Crusade finally comes home!

It’s getting pretty sweltering at the Thunder Compound already this summer. Not a bad time to hunker down, crank up the air and read some comics. Oh, New 52’s not cutting it for you, eh? Well, lucky for you, DC has also ramped up its trade paperback publications just in time for the summer movie push.

One of the probably really easily-overlooked gems of this push is the rerelease of the Batman: Knighfall saga. This is, of course, timed to coincide with The Dark Knight Rises, and its featured antagonist. Unless you spent the early ’90s under a rock, or weren’t born yet, you know I’m talking about the roid-raging, back-busting Bane. I can understand the confusion, seeing as the movie Bane has more in common with Vin Diesel in XXX than the comic baddie who broke the Bat, but that’s a whole other column.

As some of you are no doubt aware, the Knightfall saga is actually three separate acts — Knightfall, Knightquest, and Knightsend — that tell the story of the fall of Batman, the rise of Azreal, and the battle to reclaim the mantle of the Bat. Up until now, Knightfall and Knightsend have seen several collections, but Knightquest, by far the biggest section of the saga, itself having two separate storylines, has been absent. Now that DC has recollected these in Omnibus style, volume 1 contains the entire Knightfall saga, so now volume 2 is free to contain Knightquest: The Crusade.

What makes that so damn cool is that in addition to being the biggest chunk of the story, this is the part where you actually get to see what happens when Azreal tries to fill the role of Batman. This story spanned for over a year in the regular books, and much like Reign of the Supermen did before it, the attempt is made to give you a taste of this “new normal,” with the standard creative teams carrying on after the loss of their titular character.
So you actually get to see the young Jean-Paul Valley go from somewhat soft spoken and well meaning to become the final villain of the saga. It’s interesting to reread these books with so much time having passed because you really get a chance to appreciate what these creative teams were going for: in many ways, Knightfall was a much more cynical tale than the other “character events” of the ’90s in that it directly addressed some of the common criticisms of the character at that time. Remember — these were the days of the Image EXTREME comics, and people were starting to murmur about the old Dark Knight being too soft compared to other hip, modern vigilante types, so the Batman team delivered a very potent dose of “careful what you wish for” by giving them a deranged, excessive, morally ambiguous, armored-and-pouched-up Batman that only could have (or should have) existed in 1994.

The nice thing is, that medicine is pretty smooth going down. As Knightfall showed off some of the great creative bat-teams of the ’80s and ’90s like Breyfogle and Grant, Aparo and Moench, and Nolan and Dixon this one continues adding very talented folks like Mike Manley, Barry Kitson, and Jo Duffy, among others. A lot of the art, especially Graham Nolan’s, holds up really well after all these years.

This is one of those collections I think most Bat-fans are well-served investing in, particularly volume 2. In my case, owning much of the other in print already, this volume fits nicely between the existing Knightfall and Knightsend collections. At least until volume 3 adds more uncollected goodness, like the other half of Knightquest, The Search.

It will also do a fine job of making you appreciate the awesome that is your DCUC 16 Azrael Batman. It might also make you lament not having an era-correct version of Robin or Bruce Batman as good as the Azrael one, but that might just be me….
