Top 5 Marvel Comics of the Year (So Far)

It’s been a busy year at Marvel. What, with new series, cancellations, gay weddings, and Avengers vs X-Men — the crossover series that everyone forgot happened back in the ’80s. And I thought since we’re halfway through the year, I’d nominate my top 5 books that jump straight to the top of my reading stack every week.

Avengers Academy

These books are in no particular order, but I can’t think of a book I have more fun with every month. Why? Because there’s very little baggage with this book. The characters aren’t top of the line, and so writer Christos Gage is free to explore and develop their lives as he sees fit, without heavy editorial hands coming down on him. Henry Pym, Tigra, and Hercules are all given chances to shine, and the students really have their personalities established given the book is now running into its third year. The artwork is always clean and fresh, colourful and energetic. Avengers Academy reminds of the days when Kurt Busiek and George Perez worked on The Avengers, when sub-plots were developed, and when there was a sheer joy in the creation of superhero adventures. The growth in the cast has detracted from the core premise of the book a little, with its focus starting to fray just a little, but I can’t really fault the book for moving ahead like this. A consistently good book, one that makes me yearn for the simpler comic days of the ’80s.

Wolverine and the X-Men

The best thing to come out of Schism, and Jason Aaron has really surprised me with this book. Like Avengers Academy, this is, in a word, fun. Similar to Avengers Academy in that the premise is based around teaching the next generation of heroes, there’s really something for Marvel to take away from this. Letting these newer characters, like Broo, Quentin Quire, and Kid Gladiator shine for an extended period of time works really well. Given Marvel’s stable of A-list characters are starting to hit their 50-year anniversaries, there is a danger that they become ossified, and there’s not much able to be done with them. Aaron shakes that up with Wolverine here, though, as the character’s slow metamorphosis from anti-authority berserker to conflicted leader really takes hold. The action is great, it’s funny, and, again, the quieter subplots really enhance the month-to-month experience. Chris Bachalo’s art has always been a favourite of mine, and it’s gorgeous here, and Nick Bradshaw tag teams well too. Hopefully this book continues its excellence well after A vs X finishes its intrusion.

Journey Into Mystery

There’s a bit of a theme with these books. Fun. That cover to the left tells you everything you need to know about this great series written by Kieron Gillen. Look at how much fun that cover is. FUN!

The resurrection of Loki to Kid Loki has been an inspired response to what I identified above  as the problem of ossification of nearly 50-year-old characters. He’s charming, mischievous, and proactive — a trait that’s commonly missing in superheroics. Hela’s handmaiden Leah is a great foil, and Loki’s hell-hound adds levity too. The artwork teams jump around a bit but always match the tone of the stories Gillen tells, so Journey Into Mystery is hands down a book that wins every month.

Daredevil

Mark Waid take a bow. You have turned the grimmest book at Marvel into one of its most — here’s that word again — fun. Matt Murdock really shines in this book as he attempts to pull his life back together from all of the horrific events inflicted on him since being outed as DD, yet there is an undercurrent that something is still not quite right. And again Waid brings back the lost art of the subplot to keep the momentum going every issue and make me yearning for more each time I finish the latest story. It all makes sense month after month, and despite the Omega Drive storyline going on a little too long, there’s always something new and fresh to like in this book.

The art has been stellar as well. It’s sad to see Marcos Martin and Paolo Rivera leaving the book, but even the work of fill-ins Koi Pham and Chris Samnee have kept up the high standards. I cannot praise this book highly enough.

The Spider-Family Books

Steve Wacker gets the first credit here because every Spider book he’s in charge of is pretty damn good, and I know I’m cheating by putting a family of books into the top 5, but I couldn’t separate them and pick just one.

Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man still runs a really high quality with its bi-weekly schedule. Slott has nailed the bigger world that Spider-Man inhabits, with supporting characters who aren’t super-powered to keep the character grounded, one of the defining traits of Spidey.

Avenging Spider-Man has been a pleasant surprise. In an earlier column I had a go at Marvel for the way they marketed the first issue, and I’m totally unsurprised that Joe Madureira hasn’t returned. But these are fun stories, short and concise and action-packed.

Venom continues its strong run, with Rick Remender making a conflicted Flash Thompson the most interesting he’s been in years. Remender uses Peter Parker’s friends and their relationships to their fullest extent to tell great stories.

And finally Scarlet Spider has been another unexpectedly pleasant surprise. A book about Kaine was never one I thought would be sustainable, but by setting Kaine up as Houston’s new number one superhero, Christopher Yost has hit on an idea that has real legs to it, and works really well as it stands alone in its little corner of the Marvel Universe.

What really hit me as I wrote this was how I am drawn to my top 5 books for common reasons, things that make me excited to read Marvel books and remind me of why I’ve always liked them. Marvel could learn a lot from these books that work so well and apply the lessons to the rest of the line and the books that aren’t so good, but maybe we’ll look at those another time.

So, that’s my Top 5. I would like to give some honourable mentions to X-Men Legacy, Warren Ellis’ Secret Avengers, Thunderbolts (more fun!!), Winter Soldier, both Fantastic Four and FF, and New Mutants.

Let me know if you agree or disagree with my picks of the year so far, and thanks for reading.

  1. Nice. I’m going to have to check some of these out. Some other commonalities I noticed:
These all seem to be series developing outside of line-wide “events”. The annual “event” cycle really prohibits the possibility of any kind of story telling or character development for the characters involved. I wish they’d have a go at a year with no “event”; or at least one that only lasts a couple months.
The other thing is the covers: pretty much all of these are action covers. Not “pin up” covers. I know lots of industry peeps would disagree, but I say action covers are far more inducive to buy than the static “every member of the team, standing” that 95% of covers are today.

  2. I can only comment on the Spider-Man titles, which have been great fun (with the exception of Avenging, which I’ve not read), and the best that Spider-Man’s been (consistently) since I’ve been reading comics, which is about 20 years. I’ve heard nothing but good about Journey Into Mystery, so that’s high on my read list; I loved Phonogram so I know Gillen can spin a good magic yarn.

Hagop – Nothing puts me off a comic more than it being involved in some universe spanning, existence changing mega event. I’m firmly of the opinion that the characters should be allowed to breath and develop a status quo that lasts, and gives the stories meaning; that way, if there’s an event once a decade (or less), it’s actually a big deal. I’ve been trying to get back into X-Men on and off over the last five years but I’ve never found an ideal point to know what’s going on.

  3. Silly question time. Has Christos Gage been on Avengers Academy since it’s inception, or just recently. I’ve only ever read his Spider-Man minis with Mario Alberti (and completely adored them), but I’ve never read any Avengers Academy.

I’d also like to nominate The Punisher as an honorable mention. Frank Castle will always be a one note character, but Greg Rucka’s run, much like the above, is flat out fun. Love every single issue.

  4. Your style is so unique in comparison to other folks I’ve read stuff from. Thanks for posting when you’ve got the opportunity, Guess I’ll just book mark this web site.|
