I’ve decided to make a change this week!
Instead of giving a little blurb on every comic released I’m gonna focus on one or 2 and give you a reason as to why you should be reading this title. The ones that I did not read are MARKED with a DNR otherwise there is a single sentence for the rest. Marvel is continuing to work on their release information, while the email did containing a number of good titles, a number of the titles listed below were not available until later in the week.
Avengers Arena #8
I’m not a huge fan of the teen titles these days. I guess I’m older and just can’t be bothered with teen issues or maybe its the fact that my oldest son is starting to hit the teens (13 next summer) and reading a comic about teens and teen issues is just a reminder of that he is getting older and of all the crap he has to go through. That said this is a fantastic read and one that I thoroughly enjoy. I know none of these characters. Scratch that. I know X-23, the Wolverine daughter clone thing. And she’s pretty interesting. There is that girl, Cammi, who was palling around with Drax and the Guardians, but for the most part, completely unknown to me.
I’ve done some research and found out that these characters for the most part are real Marvel characters that made appearances here and there. Some of them have ties to other Marvel mainstays, past or present, making them legacy characters. I like the introduction of Bloodstone, a great classic character, and the new teen version of him is excellent. This issue is no exception, there are hints at the character development and in this issue we really get into some of the good that we can expect to see from him. It looks like Marvel introduces another homosexual male into the Marvel Universe who is in love with a living video game character. One that strangely resembles a certain 2000AD character… ? A love triangle ensues, and in Arcade’s Murderworld that will either lead to some decent character development or some serious blood!
This issue gets into X-23 character development as she continues to deal with her ability to kill in more than a 1000 ways. She’s also decided not to kill, but to use her powers productively. She finds Juston Seyfert, making certain he isn’t dead, although his Sentinel has seen better days and he is pissed off. She does her best to get him on track, but he’s super pissed and is ready for revenge. And isn’t that what this series is about?
Without a doubt this series capitalizes on the success of Hunger Games, the book/movie about sending teens off to fight to death. I’m certain it is more complex than that but I could care less. It’s just a popularization/westernization of Koushun Takami’s Battle Royale, a story taking place in a chilling future where teens are rounded up to fight to the death for freedom on a tiny little island. The movie is a fantastic and chilling piece of work. Before I get too deep, the theme of children trapped on an island isn’t new, Lord of the Flies written in 1954 handles the topic as well, although without the Battle Royale bit.
How does Avengers Arena stand up so far? Pretty well, they are covering the whole teens killing teens theme pretty well. It could probably handled in an even more adult style comic, with lots more blood and lots more passion. I don’t see this as the ultimate goal, it seems to be more about thinning the current staple of teen heroes, bringing focus to the ones that will be an ongoing part of the 616.
This is one of the titles that I am enjoying. It’s a good read and as the numbers thin we start to get a good idea of the characters that we will be enjoying in the future.
I love team-up comics, I miss that series from the series from the ’70s and this title handles it well.
Still one of my favorite comics out there. This whole arc is super trippy cool.
Rocket and Nova are off to a splendid start! This is a good fun read.
Ultimate Comics Wolverine #3
Savage Wolverine #4
Another of my favorites. Ok, ok, I admit I read it for Cho’s Shanna. Ruff.
Daredevil: End of Days #7
DNR, Daredevil depresses me.
Iron Man #8
Silly Iron Man, that’s what you get for effing off into space half-cocked.
Superior Spider-Man #8
Another brilliant title. For the first time in years I can’t wait to read ole Spidey.
Uhm… Lost. Again.
X-Men Legacy #9
Interesting, artistic, mind-bending.
Captain Marvel #12
DNR, I can’t get into the new costume. And hair-do.
Wolverine & the X-Men #27
I know I read this. I think this was an Age of Ultron tie-in and as such didn’t care for it. Cause Wolvie changes history, or does he?
I like this comic, along with Scarlet Spider these are good reads.
Dark Avengers #189
Eh… Another alt world in the midst of madness.
Not finished yet. Still lost. Really, the X-verse… oi.
