He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2013) #1

Right, so I blasted the new 52 He-Man costume not too long ago in article that lost its steam and ended with a thud as I was tentative to offend anyone. Steve, sorry (and not sorry in the I feel badly I offended you, but in the snarky, deal with it sorry) but you’ll have to endure more Masters of the Universe articles from me, and others on the Fwoosh. Chris, I’m taking you up, I’m reading the new issues.

This is VeeBee’s fault. He knows that I am huge lover of the 200x designs, artwork, and all the greatness that comes from that era. That’s not to say that I don’t love the original MOTU stuff, I do, but with our modern sense and tastes I don’t mind a relevant update. I thought 200x did that. After he read my article, VeeBee egged me on to get the comic and start writing it up. I’ll promise the first 6 issues and nothing else.

The new comic came out this year and is penned by the wonderful Keith Giffen and that should be enough for anyone. Giffen is a comic writing god and one that I’ve followed since well… guh… the ’80s. I shouldn’t have to say anything other than Legion of Superheroes or Ambush Bug, but for those younger… Marvel’s Annihilation. Gods, writing Legion of Superheroes and Ambush Bug in the same line was magical, it made me feel young again. And I should take Benty’s advice and read Giffen’s Masters of Universe comic with my kid goggles on, remembering what it was like to be a kid that would read and watch anything He-Man.

I tried. But I was so lost with this issue until Despara showed up. Then I googled and wiki’d and found out this is She-Ra/Adora when she was Force Captain of The Horde. Which I then realized that I forgot or something and now have to go back and figure out what the hell is going on. Being a Giffen comic I put my trust in him as I’m certain he knows what he is doing, but really? “Ugh” to quote VeeBee.

The basic of the issue is that King Randor is throwing something, party or funeral celebration, for Teela Na, you know the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull or Goddess who seems to have perished in battle with… No idea. Maybe Skeletor, since there is reference to his passing or death or something. Right off I’m lost here. I have no introduction to where I am in the He-History and as a result I’m ready to chunk this comic. But I continue. After the song and dance, EternIa is attacked by a female Hordak. She’s having a chat with some dude back somewhere and he’s warning her about magic and to not rely on science… blah blah blah. She confronts He-Man and Teela in battle, the Hordak helmet comes off and it is Adora under the mask! Drama!

Right so now I’m somewhat on track. This is sometime after A defeat of Skeletor before the arrival of Hordak and the Evil Horde. I think. I might have to read a comic or 2 to get that right. Ugh. I hate when comics do this. They jump on new readers into the middle of something with no reference to anything and you as a reader are totally lost. And I am totally lost. Not that I think of myself as some expert in the world of He-History, but seriously this has me lost.

Then there is the issue of the costumes! I touched on that before but as a new reader there is no introduction to why He-Man is suddenly wearing a chainmail penis protector and why his chest harness is no longer grey strapped or leather but instead some kind of oversized stainless steel Gundam J-Chain or Power Pipe. ugh. As much of a lover of 200x as I am, I’m not liking this design. Or Teela’s, c’mon! Put some clothes on. Even in the barbarian world that Ibentmyman-thing loves she had more on than this comic’s Sports Illustrated painted bikini.

Ok. Breathe, remember Giffen. Kid goggles.

I can’t. I’m trying. Don’t get me wrong, the comic isn’t doing what Mattel does and walks in to my house during breakfast and pees in my Wheaties, but it isn’t winning me over. Yes it is He-Man and yes the costume elements are there, but there’s just a big jump from what comes in MOTU and even 200x to this current design. There’s no why, and in all the long convoluted history of He-Man we deserve a why. In the first issue. And at least some direct references to where the hell I am in the He-History and if there are back issues that I need to be reading. If I didn’t already commit to read the first 6 issues, I’d drop this comic Giffen, He-Man and all. There’s not enough here for me keep reading this comic.

Let’s hope issue 2 is better.

  5. I think the costumes they got em wearing in the DC vs Masters of the Universe mini series look cool and would make for some great MOTUC figures if anything, especially Stratos with the helmet. As far as the comix go they should have these costumes as variants they wear for different missions or occasions but primarily have em wearing a solid hybrid of the classic vintage 80’s/Filmation look and the 200x designs. In a perfect universe. 😉
